Keeping Your Invisalign Trays Clean

Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Hampton, Portsmouth - VA

If you have just been fitted for your Invisalign® trays, you may be nervous about properly maintaining them. Fortunately, Invisalign trays are quite easy to clean, and because you change out your aligner trays for a new pair approximately every two weeks, you get many opportunities to get the maintenance right.

The most important way you can keep your aligners clean is by putting them in your mouth immediately after you have brushed and flossed your teeth, when they have as little bacteria on them as possible. This prevents bacteria from building up inside the trays. One thing to remember when using Invisalign is that you need to be vigilant about keeping your teeth clean inside the trays, because any bacteria that gets caught in them will be stuck there until you brush your teeth again.

As for cleaning the trays themselves, brushing the interior with a soft-bristle toothbrush is a good way to scrape bacteria or food particles out of the inside. No toothpaste is necessary- instead, use the cleaning kit Invisalign includes with the trays.

Finally, you want to take your trays out when you eat. Rinse them out immediately after taking them off, and store them in a glass of water while you eat: mouth bacteria grow faster in dry environments. Once you have finished eating, brush and floss your teeth, clean the inside of the trays, and put them back in your mouth. Making this a habit will keep your teeth healthy and your Invisalign trays looking nice and clear.
