Can I Still Snack While Wearing My Invisalign?

Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Hampton, Portsmouth - VA

Invisalign® aligners are a great solution for mild cases of crooked teeth, as well as a variety of other dental problems. Invisalign® has minimal affect on a person’s day to day life making it a convenient option. It is recommended that aligners be worn for 20-22 hours out of the day, which isn’t a problem for most people, but what many seem to forget is that they should be taken out when eating, and in some cases drinking.

While many people using Invisalign® may be tempted to snack while wearing their Invisalign®, it may not be the best idea. Chewing while wearing aligners can greatly increase the risk of cracking, breaking, or distorting them. When a person eats or drinks with their trays in, acidic fluids can get stuck in the trays, ultimately exposing the teeth to an acid bath and increasing the possibility of cavities.

Although beverages such as water do not require your trays to be removed, it is best to drink all other beverages through a straw to prevent staining. When drinking a hot beverage, remember to remove aligners, as the temperature may cause the aligners to distort. Maintaining proper hygiene is essential to a healthy smile. After each meal, remember to brush and floss prior to re-inserting your trays.
