Can I Sleep Whilst Wearing Invisalign?

Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Hampton, Portsmouth - VA

Invisalign® technology has dramatically altered our perception of what the experience of undergoing orthodontic adjustment can be. No longer are Virginia Beach-area residents forced to endure uncomfortable tightening appointments or the feeling of uncomfortable metal wires jabbing into their gums and cheeks.

Your clear plastic aligners will fit snugly and comfortably over your teeth while subtly shifting them to a more comfortable, natural and aesthetically pleasing position.

We have found that Invisalign® offers its best results when you wear your aligners for between 20 and 22 hours a day. This means that you can indeed wear them while you sleep.

The vast majority of our patients report no problems with their aligners while they sleep. Because the aligners are custom-designed for the specific and unique shape of your teeth, they don’t slip off.

We understand you probably have questions about how Invisalign® works and how your aligners will affect your life. We’re happy to answer your questions. And most of our patients find that their lifestyles are not meaningfully affected by their aligners.

Can I Eat While Weaing Invisalign?

Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Hampton, Portsmouth - VA

While undergoing an Invisalign® treatment, it’s important to take some simple steps to maintain your aligners. This keeps them clean and ensures they’re effective at subtly re-aligning your teeth and bite. One of the simplest things you can do is to remove your aligners while eating.

In short, the answer to the question that serves as the title to this post is “no.” You should not eat while wearing your Invisalign® aligners.

Fortunately, removing a set of aligners is incredibly simple and takes just a few seconds. One of the reasons Invisalign® is so widely preferred over traditional metal braces is that you don’t have to worry about getting food stuck in your aligners. You simply pop out the aligners, enjoy your meal, then pop the aligners right back in.

Simplicity and convenience are key to how Invisalign® works. This technology is designed to be as simple and easy-to-use as possible, because it’s widely understood that such simplicity will reduce frustrations, ensuring that you follow through with your treatment until it’s completed.

Keeping Your Invisalign Trays Clean

Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Hampton, Portsmouth - VA

If you have just been fitted for your Invisalign® trays, you may be nervous about properly maintaining them. Fortunately, Invisalign trays are quite easy to clean, and because you change out your aligner trays for a new pair approximately every two weeks, you get many opportunities to get the maintenance right.

The most important way you can keep your aligners clean is by putting them in your mouth immediately after you have brushed and flossed your teeth, when they have as little bacteria on them as possible. This prevents bacteria from building up inside the trays. One thing to remember when using Invisalign is that you need to be vigilant about keeping your teeth clean inside the trays, because any bacteria that gets caught in them will be stuck there until you brush your teeth again.

As for cleaning the trays themselves, brushing the interior with a soft-bristle toothbrush is a good way to scrape bacteria or food particles out of the inside. No toothpaste is necessary- instead, use the cleaning kit Invisalign includes with the trays.

Finally, you want to take your trays out when you eat. Rinse them out immediately after taking them off, and store them in a glass of water while you eat: mouth bacteria grow faster in dry environments. Once you have finished eating, brush and floss your teeth, clean the inside of the trays, and put them back in your mouth. Making this a habit will keep your teeth healthy and your Invisalign trays looking nice and clear.

Invisalign: Customized for Your Teeth

Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Hampton, Portsmouth - VA

When it comes to crooked teeth, no two mouths are alike.  Some people have noticeable gaps between their teeth that increase the risk for periodontal disease, others may have their teeth crowded together in a way that makes them difficult to brush effectively. One great advantage of the Invisalign treatment process is that it can be customized to work for a wide variety of dental problems.

Dental conditions that can be successfully treated with Invisalign include:

  • Gapped teeth
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Open bite
  • Overly-crowded teeth
  • Crossbite

After your initial consultation, Dr. Folck will take a series of manual and digital impressions that show exactly what your teeth look like before Invisalign. These impressions become the basis for your Invisalign dental trays, which Dr. Folck will customize to fit the dental conditions you want to correct. Dr. Folck will create a whole series of trays to be changed out every two weeks, each one designed to push your teeth a little closer to their correct position.

Best of all, the design process can be adjusted to account for the speed with which your teeth respond to the Invisalign treatment. Some people find that their teeth take a little longer to shift into the correct position; for these patients, a more incremental treatment may be more effective and less painful. Invisalign allows Dr. Folck and you to decide exactly what needs to be fixed with your teeth, and then create a plan for fixing them.

Dr. Folck welcomes new patients to his Invisalign practice. If you have crooked teeth and want to find out what Invisalign can do for them, contact his office today by calling (757) 428-7440. Dr. Folck serves patients in Virginia Beach, Hampton, Norfolck, Portsmouth, and Chesapeake.

Questions to Ask Your Dentist About Invisalign

Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Hampton, Portsmouth - VA

When you first decide to ask whether Invisalign is right for you, you will likely set up a consultation with Dr. Folck at his Virginia Beach dental practice. During this consultation, Dr. Folck will decide explain the Invisalign procedure, and you can ask anything you want about his method for carrying it out. It is important that you leave your appointment knowing enough about Invisalign to feel comfortable going through with it, and for this, you need to ask the right questions.

Some questions to ask your dentist before starting Invisalign:

  • How long will my treatment last?
The length of the treatment varies from person to person, but is usually 7-12 months.
  • Will my case require Interproximal Reduction?
Interproximal Reduction involves shaping your teeth to make them slightly narrower.
  • What happens if I lose an aligner?
Some plans possibly could let you replace a certain number of Invisalign aligners for free; others may charge you for losing aligners.
  • Are mid-course refinements and corrections included in the fee?
At the beginning of your Invisalign procedure, the dentist will have some idea of what your aligners will look like at every stage in the process. However, these plans may change if your teeth don’t respond as expected.
  • Do you offer post-treatment whitening?
After several months of Invisalign, you may find that your teeth will benefit from a whitening session.

At Virginia Beach Invisalign, we believe in tailoring our Invisalign process to the individual needs of each patient. We know that no two orthodontic cases are exactly the same, which is one of the reasons we prefer Invisalign: the modeling and adjustment technology guarantees that every patient’s plan is customized to their specific dental requirements. When you use Invisalign with us, you can be sure we’ll treat you as an individual.

Invisalign can improve the health and appearance of your teeth, and give you a new appreciation for your own smile. To set up an initial consultation for your Invisalign today, give Virginia Beach Invisalign a call at (757) 428-7440.

Does Invisalign Have Any Health Benefits?

Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Hampton, Portsmouth - VA

Invisalign is an excellent alternative to traditional metal braces. Countless numbers of our Norfolk patients have chosen Invisalign for its subtle, virtually invisible appearance, convenience, and comfort. But did you know there are health benefits as well? To learn more about Invisalign, please contact Norfolk Invisalign dentist Dr. Michael Folck today at 755-428-7440 to arrange a consultation.

Invisalign consists of a series of invisible plastic straighteners, each of which is slightly different from the previous one. Each new straightener gently moves your teeth closer to their final, corrected positions. After about a year (each custom Invisalign straightener is worn for two weeks), your teeth will have reached a more natural, attractive position.

Far from just a convenient, attractive alternative to metal braces, Invisalign actually offers some health benefits as well.

  • Healthier gums: Metal braces can irritate gum tissue. While this usually disappears after a period of adjustment, every patient is different, and each in-office adjustment brings the possibility of additional irritation.
  • Easier cleaning: Although you’ll need to wear your Invisalign aligners as much as possible, they are removable for meals and for your daily brushing and flossing routines. This creates a more sanitary environment in your mouth. Unlike metal braces, there’s no chance of getting food stuck in Invisalign!
  • Straighter teeth: Of course, the biggest health benefit of all comes from the straight, healthy smile you’ll enjoy after your treatment is complete. Studies consistently demonstrate links between oral health and heart health. Your oral health can even affect your chances of developing diabetes!

Today’s patients have a clear choice in Invisalign invisible braces. To discover how Invisalign can improve your smile and your health, please contact Norfolk Invisalign dentist Dr. Michael Fock today at 755-428-7440 to arrange an appointment.

Can I Still Snack While Wearing My Invisalign?

Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Hampton, Portsmouth - VA

Invisalign® aligners are a great solution for mild cases of crooked teeth, as well as a variety of other dental problems. Invisalign® has minimal affect on a person’s day to day life making it a convenient option. It is recommended that aligners be worn for 20-22 hours out of the day, which isn’t a problem for most people, but what many seem to forget is that they should be taken out when eating, and in some cases drinking.

While many people using Invisalign® may be tempted to snack while wearing their Invisalign®, it may not be the best idea. Chewing while wearing aligners can greatly increase the risk of cracking, breaking, or distorting them. When a person eats or drinks with their trays in, acidic fluids can get stuck in the trays, ultimately exposing the teeth to an acid bath and increasing the possibility of cavities.

Although beverages such as water do not require your trays to be removed, it is best to drink all other beverages through a straw to prevent staining. When drinking a hot beverage, remember to remove aligners, as the temperature may cause the aligners to distort. Maintaining proper hygiene is essential to a healthy smile. After each meal, remember to brush and floss prior to re-inserting your trays.

Will anyone know I’m wearing Invisalign?

Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Hampton, Portsmouth - VA

If you suffer from crooked teeth, you might be afraid to show your smile to the world. While traditional metal braces are effective, many patients simply don’t want to deal with the discomfort and inconvenience. Today’s patients have a clear choice in Invisalign invisible braces. To learn more about Invisalign, please contact Virginia Beach dentist Dr. Michael Folck today at 755-428-7440 to arrange a consultation.

Invisalign relies on a series of translucent straighteners that you place over your teeth. Each custom straightener in the sequence is slightly different from the previous one, and each time you wear a new straightener, it gently pushes your teeth closer to their final, corrected positions. Each straightener is worn for about two weeks, after which time it is discarded and replaced with the next one in the series. The entire process takes about a year.

One of the most exciting benefits of Invisalign is its virtual invisibility. While the aligners are discernable up close, the vast majority of people you encounter in everyday life won’t even know you’re wearing them. The BPA-free plastic aligners blend seamlessly with your smile at every stage because they’re custom-built for you.

Is Invisalign Painful?

Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Hampton, Portsmouth - VA

One of the reasons that so many patients in the Virginia Beach area are dissatisfied with traditional metal braces is that those braces are uncomfortable and often painful. The metal wires can poke and prod sensitive gums and cheeks, and the frequent tightenings required throughout the orthodontic process are thoroughly unpleasant.

Fortunately, exciting Invisalign® technology does not have this problem. Offered by Dr. Michael Folck, DDS, Invisalign provides you with a comfortable, painless orthodontic adjustment.

Invisalign® works through sets of custom designed clear plastic aligners. These fit snugly over your teeth, ensuring a comfortable experience. There are no metal wires to poke the interior of your mouth, and since you remove the aligners before you eat, you won’t have to worry about the discomfort of getting food caught under the wires.

Finally, Invisalign® does not require adjustment appointments. You’ll wear a set of aligners for a certain period of time, then return to our office for a new set. No painful, tedious time in a dentist’s chair while braces are tightened.

If you’re a Virginia Beach, Virginia area resident and you want to learn more about Invisalign’s® advantages, please contact Dr. Michael Folck, DDS today for a consultation.
