Invisalign vs Braces

Invisalign is an alternative to traditional braces. It utilizes many of the same principles to achieve a straighter smile, but the tools are radically different. Traditional braces emerged in the Age of Steam, when train tracks linked the country and the economy was on a gold standard. They are crude, fixed, metallic and inconvenient. Invisalign is an orthodontic tool for the Information Age–computer-designed aligners made of clear, comfortable, durable plastic. As with trains, braces still have their place, but if you don’t have to use them, would you choose to?

This page contains some background information on the two treatments, but the best way to learn which is right for you is to talk to a dentist in person. In the Virginia Beach and Norfolk area, please call 877-206-3444 or email Michael P. Folck, DDS for a consultation.

The Same Principles

Invisalign and braces both use the same basic principles to move your teeth. They apply constant force to encourage bone remodeling that results in tooth movement. For a more detailed explanation, see How Invisalign Works.

Where the treatments differ is how they apply the force. Braces use brackets affixed to the teeth and wires to apply force, most often by pulling teeth. Invisalign’s clear plastic aligners gently push your teeth into position.

Advantages of Invisalign

Braces are a highly successful orthodontic treatment, but they come with a number of disadvantages. They are visible, can irritate or even cut your cheeks and tongue, and are very inconvenient to clean. On the other hand, Invisalign is:

  • Nearly invisible
  • Removable for eating, cleaning teeth, and pictures
  • Comfortable—no sharp metal, only smooth, BPA-free plastic
  • Convenient—Your teeth move every day, but you only need to see Dr. Folck every six weeks
  • Free of dietary restrictions
  • Without special cleaning instructions—reduced risk of periodontal disease and tooth discoloration due to cleaning difficulties

When you look at these advantages, it’s no wonder that Invisalign has become increasingly popular since its introduction.

Is Invisalign Right for You?

Not all people can be treated using Invisalign. There are still some types of realignment that can best be performed using traditional braces. See What Invisalign Treats for a discussion of the types of cases that can be treated with the procedure.
